HIFU Skin Treatment

HIFU is a non-surgical method to lift and tighten the skin of the face, neck, and body using high-intensity focused ultrasound therapy. The ultrasound targets different depths of the skin, working to tighten the different skin layers to produce optimal results.

In fact, HIFU works to rejuvenate the skin (and deliver similar results) as a traditional facelift – but without the surgery, or downtime. For the face and neck, HIFU can penetrate up to 4.5mm below the skin's surface to go beyond the dermis into the subcutaneous tissue to tigthen the superficial muscle layer (SMAS) where the skin starts to weaken. For the body, 6.0mm through 13.0mm is used.

How Does HIFU Works

HIFU treatment begins with cleaning the chosen area of the face or body and applying a gel. Using a handheld device that emits the ultrasound waves in short bursts, we begin with a gliding motion along the treatment area. Cartridge depth includes the following area of treatment:

For Face: 1.5mm - 4.5mm

For Body: 6.0mm - 13.0mm

Each session typically lasts between 30-45 minutes. Protocols vary by zone and person, and your ideal treatment will be determined during your consultation and first treatment.

What You Should Know

Before Treatment

  • Avoid injectables 4 weeks in or near treatment areas before treatment.

  • Avoid any facial peels 4 weeks before treatment.

  • Avoid microdermabrasion 2 weeks before treatment.

  • Avoid having laser treatment on the area 2 weeks before treatment.

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure 48 hours prior to treatment (we cannot treat skin which has been sunburnt).

  • Avoid skin care containing active ingredients 3-5 days before treatment (i.e. Vitamin A, Vitamin C, AHAs and BHAs).

  • HIFU is not suitable for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • If you have dental implants or metal plates in the treatment area, please let us know prior to your appointment.

  • If you currently taking any acne or skin thinning or photosensitive medication such as Roaccutane, we cannot treat your skin as there is a risk to burning.

  • If you have any open sores, acne, infection or skin sensitivity in the area, we cannot treat with HIFU.

  • We cannot treat with HIFU if you have previously had threads within the last 6 months.

  • Skin must be clean shaven prior to treatment.

  • We recommend for you to take pain medication an hour before your appointment to help alleviate minor discomfort.

During Treatment

  • If doing treatment on face, please arrive at the office without makeup on, and with a clean (for men a clean shaven) face.

The treatment is between 30-45 minutes. Please reach out to us if you have any questions.

After Treatment

  • It is normal for the area to feel warm immediately after the procedure.

  • The treated area may be flushed, red and feel tingly.

  • Do not wax the treated area for 3-5 days.

  • Do not laser the treated area for 2 weeks.

  • Do not exfoliate the skin for 2-3 days.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.

  • Avoid skin care containing active ingredients 3-5 days after treatment (i.e. Vitamin A, Vitamin C, AHAs and BHAs).

  • Avoid hot baths, steam rooms and massage for 24 hours.

  • Avoid sun burn during the healing process of the skin for 2 weeks.

  • If the skin feels hot or sensitive, apply aloe vera or a cold compress to the area.

  • Apply SPF 40+ daily.

  • Drink plenty of water.

Return for a follow-up treatment in about a month or as recommended.

We cannot give a more definite time frame since results vary depending on an individual's collagen production process and other lifestyle factors that could affect aging. The fact is we are ageing every day, but HIFU will slow down the aging process.

Is there any downtime after doing HIFU?

Unlike cosmetic surgery, HIFU treatments do not require any downtime. After the treatment, you will see some slight redness or swelling but normally your skin will have a healthy glow. You need to take certain precautions like avoiding temperatures that are too hot or too cold, but you will be able to resume most of your daily activities.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments varies depending on your skin goals and age. We usually recommend a series of 3 with a minimum of a month between each appointment. Your medical professional will recommend a plan based on your skin's needs and your age.

How soon will I see results from a HIFU treatment?
